Main Story Beats
A quick reference for the core Kanto badge route and the major midgame milestones that gate progression.
FireRed and LeafGreen keep the classic Kanto arc, but the pacing is smoother thanks to modernized menus, reusable TMs being replaced by single-use machines, and cleaner route flow than the original Game Boy releases.
Main badge route
- Pewter City for Brock and the Boulder Badge.
- Cerulean City for Misty, Bill's visit, and access to the Nugget Bridge stretch.
- Vermilion City for Lt. Surge and the first major HM utility push.
- Celadon, Fuchsia, Saffron, Cinnabar, and finally Viridian to close the eight-gym route.
Progression note
The midgame is shaped by Silph Co., Team Rocket cleanup, and unlocking better world traversal through Cut, Surf, Strength, and the Safari Zone sequence.
